There are three spots in the Kotka-Hamina region that top everything else. Maretarium provides a fascinating glimpse into life in Finnish lakes, Sirius Sport Resort can make your dream of flying come true, and Maritime Centre Vellamo caters to those with a thirst to learn about history. Experience all three!
See every Finnish fish at the Maretarium
Maretarium is an aquarium located in Kotka featuring almost 60 Finnish fish species and other small aquatic creatures in their natural habitats. The best time to experience the tour is in the afternoon during the holiday season: at the peaks of the holiday seasons, a diver plunges into the pool to feed the fish every day at 3 pm.
The Maretarium also boasts a shop filled with all manner of fun souvenirs for yourself, your friends and your family. Maretarium's mascot Hanna the Pike often likes to get acquainted with children who visit the aquarium. For some coffee and other refreshments, you can head to Meri Cafe Kristina where you can also observe the bustle of the Sapokka Marina.
Maretarium, Kotka. Tickets starting at €7.50. Group and family tickets are also available.
Fly, surf and climb at Sirius
At Sirius Sport Resort, you can make man's age-old dream of flying come true and experience freefall safely in a specially-built wind tunnel. You can also try your hand at indoor surfing, which is similar to skateboarding, either on your belly (bodyboarding) or standing up (flowboarding). And there is no fear of getting your clothes wet as you can borrow a wetsuit at the resort!
In summer, the Norway Park rope and climbing park at Sirius challenges you to push your boundaries by climbing the courses of varying levels of difficulty at heights of 3–9 metres.
After a day of flying, surfing and climbing, hungry adventurers can seek nourishment at the modern, international and fresh café-restaurant Skyfall.
The amazing experiences at Sirius are available to all healthy individuals 5 years of age and up!
Sirius Sport Resort, Pyhtää. Indoor surfing price starting at €15, flying starting at €60. Family and group packages are also available for the flying activity. Norway Park is open from spring to autumn. Groups can make reservations at other times as well.
Ride the waves of history at Vellamo
Maritime Centre Vellamo in Kotka offers an entirely new kind of approach to history: quick 15-minute tours for groups are also available, along with tours with surprise content! At Vellamo, children are allowed to touch the exhibits and try a variety of activities at more than 50 activity points.
When the tour is over, you can head to the museum shop Plootu to purchase souvenirs ranging from mobile phone covers to books and marine-themed postcards. Should you choose to spend the entire day at Vellamo, Restaurant Laatonki, which is located on the premises, serves excellent lunch and snacks.
When weather permits, you can finish the tour by climbing to the crest of the wave-shaped Vellamo building! The sloped roof provides access to an observation platform where you can take in the beauty of the sea and the view of Kotka Harbour. Let your worries melt away and enjoy the fresh sea breeze!
Maritime Centre Vellamo (The Martime Museum of Finland, Kymeenlaakso Museum, etc.), Kotka. Admission starting at €6, children under 18 years of age free of charge. Free admission for everyone on Wednesdays 5 pm–8 pm.
